Importance of Oiling in head, nose, ears, feet etc

Today’s medical experts generally do not allow oiling in ears & nose. They do not provide proper reason but say it is not good medically. However, Ayurveda has different logical approach, the great scholar of Ayurveda Maharishi Vagbhatta describe this topic very nicely in his book Astanga Sangraha.

Let’s understand the importance of oiling & massaging our body as per Ayurveda. Body massage with oil is called “Abhayanga” & with churnam (powder) “Udvartanam” in Ayurveda.

Massaging body with oil regularly is very good for health. It strengthens body, helps in insomnia, very good for skin health & anti-ageing etc.

Massaging head with oil relieves in headache, prevents hair fall & hair graying, strengthens the sense organs, reduces stress & tiredness etc.

Oiling in ears as drops prevents locking jaws, prevents deafness, prevents hardness of hearing, useful in earache, nourishes internal mechanism & nerves etc.

Massaging feet with oil is good for foot health, promotes sound sleeping & vision, relieves in numbness, prevents heel cracks, reduces stiffness, strengthens feet etc.

Nasal oiling with medicated oil or cow’s ghrita promotes sound sleep, relieves snoring, beneficial in headaches & migraine, relieves in sinus, clears & smoothens breathing pathways, relieves in mental stress, nourishes internal nerves, improves memory & mental strength, reduces hair fall & hair graying, improves vision, promotes good voice quality, keeps shoulder – neck – chest strong, strengthens sense organs etc.

Some precautions must be taken while oiling or for body massage. People suffering from KAPHA dosha related health problem should avoid body massage & people who have indigestion problem also avoid it. For nasal drops & ear oiling one must take advise from an Ayurveda physician to know the suitable oil & timing etc.
